The Colts have not started the season 0-4 since Peyton Manning’s rookie season in 1998. It seems fitting that the first season he has not played since then that Indianapolis would be winless through a quarter of the NFL season.
With Kerry Collins out with a concussion, Curtis Painter was starting at quarterback, and he actually played reasonably well finishing 13 of 30 for 281 yards and two touchdowns. Painter was able to connect with Pierre Garcon on two long touchdown passes that kept the game in reach. Garcon finished the game with 2 receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
After Garcon scored his second touchdown the Colts were leading 17 to 10, but the Buccaneers were too strong in the last 20 minutes to hold off. The go ahead touchdown was scored by second year back LeGarrette Blount on a 35 yard run.
For two straight weeks the Indianapolis defense has played strong all game, except for at the end. This type of play is really to be expected because generally the defense watches Manning take over games in the fourth quarter. The Colts will be looking for their first win of the season next week when they host the 1-3 Chiefs.
